Highlights of Eastern Poland

Day 1 | Warsaw
Meet your tour guide at 6:00 pm in the Novotel Centrum Hotel lobby for the kick-off dinner at the hotel. D

Day 2 | Warsaw
Your exploration of Poland's fascinating history and rich culture begins this morning with the sites of Warsaw: splendidly rebuilt Old Town, numerous Baroque and Gothic monuments and churches, the Warsaw Ghetto and Lazienki Park, to name a few. The afternoon is free - why not check out that trendy boutique you saw earlier on Nowy Swiat Street. BL

Day 3 | Warsaw / Kazimierz / Lublin
We follow the Vistula River south to Kazimierz Dolny, one of Poland's most picturesque towns and an inspiration for generations of artists. Later we drive to Lublin. Overnight in Lublin. BLD

Day 4  | Lublin  
The sightseeing tour of Lublin starts at the 14th century Krakow Gate, the main entrance to the once-medieval city. Other highlights include Castle Hill, the Jewish Tower, and St. Albert's Church. Lunch. The afternoon excursion to visit a beautiful Baroque Palace in Kozlowka. Return to Lublin. BL

Day 5 | Lublin / Zamosc
The road today leads through scenic south-western Galicia, famous for its prize-winning horse farms. We stop in Zamosc - often called the ''Padua of the North'' - to admire its striking Town Hall, colorfully painted historic buildings and open squares. Overnight in Zamosc. BL

Day 6 | Zamosc/ Lancut / Zakopane
No visit to eastern Poland is complete without Lancut, a 17th century palace rebuilt in a French neo-Baroque style. Once owned by the aristocratic Lubomirski and Potocki families, it now houses a museum of antique furnishings and splendid gilt paintings. Its companion Coach Museum displays several carriages dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. From here we drive toward the majestic Tatra mountains and the alpine resort town of Zakopane. BL

Day 7 | Zakopane
Not only is Zakopane a four-season vacationland, it is also the center of the age-old Highlander culture. Going through town, you'll see all sorts of people: holiday-makers, hikers, colorful market vendors and sun-seekers enjoying the pure mountain air and magnificent vistas. Need a break? A cable car will whisk you away to Mount Gubalowka for a splendid view of the valley below. The afternoon is at your leisure. Tonight you will enjoy a savory dinner accompanied by live music provided by local Highlanders. BD

Day 8 | Zakopane / Krakow
Depart for Krakow. But not before you've taken an unforgettable 4-hour rafting trip down the Dunajec River that runs through Pieniny Mountains National Park. Lunch en route at a local restaurant. Arrival in Krakow, where you're free to mix with the locals or just relax. BL

Day 9 | Krakow
Morning city tour of Krakow, Poland's former capital and residence of kings. With its charming blend of magnificent architecture, churches, cultural monuments, museums and a vibrant contemporary community, Krakow was selected as a ''European Cultural Capital'' for the year 2000. Tour highlights include the Old Town, Cloth Hall, Wit Stwosz's acclaimed altar masterpiece at St. Mary's Church, Jagiellonian University and Wawel Castle and Cathedral - all remarkable symbols of Poland's national identity. After lunch, your afternoon is free. BL

Day 10 | Krakow
The morning is free; a nice opportunity to explore the wonders of Krakow on your own. Afternoon excursion to nearby Wieliczka Salt Mine: three spectacular, underground miles of hand-carved chapels, statues and chambers made of pure salt! BD

Day 11 | Krakow / Auschwitz / Czestochowa
A profound day as we travel from the unthinkable tragedy remembered at Auschwitz, site of the former Nazi concentration camp, to the Jasna Gora monastery in Czestochowa, Poland's holiest place and center of pilgrimage. The afternoon is your leisure time. Overnight in Czestochowa. BL

Day 12 | Czestochowa / Zelazowa Wola / Warsaw
After breakfast we explore the Jasna Gora monastery and church, a repository of priceless treasures where the faithful and the curious come to venerate the image of the Black Madonna. Depart for Warsaw en route visit the Manor House of F. Chopin in Zelazowa Wola. Overnight in Warsaw. BL

Day 13 | Warsaw
Today your sightseeing begins with the classical grandeur of the Royal Castle - former residence of Polish kings. Afternoon free. Dinner with folk performance at local restaurant. BD

Day 14 | Warsaw
After breakfast the tour is concluded. B
