Festival of Jewish Culture in Krakow 25.06-03.07.2005
The Festival of Jewish Culture in Krakow, a tribute to Jewish culture, religion and history, is one of the largest and most renowned events of this kind in the world and will be held in Krakow between June 25 and July 3, 2005.
The festival is taking place mainly in Kazimierz, a Jewish quarter since 14th century till World War II, which is located in the centre of Krakow. The history of the festival goes back to 1988 since when it was held annually. Being one of the most important cultural events in Poland it attracts, every year, tens of thousands of Jewish and non-Jewish guests from all over the world as including leading artists from the United States, Israel and Europe.
Over the course of nine days there will be over 100 events offered: concerts, theatre performances, films, workshops, lectures, exhibitions and book promotions. Workshops, an important part of the festival, concentrate on Hebrew calligraphy, Yiddish language, traditional folk dancing, Chasidic and Israeli dance, cantor singing, Chasidic singing, klezmology, Ashkenazi and Sephadric cuisine, and activities for children. The music performed in synagogues, in the streets and homes ranges from synagogal music to klezmer, Chasidic, jazz, folk, chamber and avant-garde. Approximately two hundred artists will take part in this year's festival. The main theme of this year's festival, which generally is a celebration of live, death, joy and pain, will be devoted to the 700 year heritage of the Jewish community in Krakow.
